The first Rotary Club was formed on23 February, 1905, by Paul Percival Harris, a young lawyer with Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant, Gustavus E. Loehr, a mining engineer and Hiram E. Shorey, a merchant tailor to bring together business and professional men in friendship and fellowship. The First Club meeting formed the nucleus for the thousands of Rotary Clubs which were later organized throughout the world. Paul Harris named the new club-Rotary because the members met in rotation in their various places of business.
Paul P. Harris, the founder of Rotary, was born atRacine,Wisconsin,U.S.A.on 19April, 1868. A man with varied knowledge and experiences, he received the Bachelor of physical Culture and LL.D. Degrees from theUniversityofVermontand LL. B Degree from theUniversityofLowa. He worked as a newspaper reporter, a business college teacher, a stock company actor, and finally settled as Thomson, a Scottish girl and a co-member inChicagoprairie Club.
He was the first Chairman of the Board of the National Society for Crippled Children and Adults in theU.S.A.He was awarded honorary Ph. D. in 1933 by theUniversityofVermont.
He was Elected President Emeritus of Rotary International in 1912 and was active in Rotary until his death on27 January 1947.
